NRTF recommends $4.2 million for Michigamme Highlands project

LANSING, MI— An Upper Peninsula land conservation effort is getting $4.2 million from the Natural Resources Trust Fund.

The Michigamme Highlands project covers about 73,000 acres across Baraga, Marquette, and Iron counties. The DNR is working to protect the land through a forest conservation easement.

The $4.2 million NRTF recommendation represents the state’s portion of the $20 million project. The effort has already received $15 million from the Forest Legacy Program and $1 million from the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation.

The conservation easement, which adjoins the McCormick Wilderness Area and Craig Lake State Park, aims to protect wildlife, habitat, and public access. It will continue to be owned and logged by Lyme Great Lakes Timberlands.
