GOGEBIC COUNTY, MI— Troopers from the Wakefield Post are warning people about dangerous ice on Lake Gogebic.
A 40-inch-high ice heave runs from east to west across the lake, about two miles south of Ontonagon County Park.
Last Friday, a snowmobile went through the ice around 10:30 p.m. The driver and machine were quickly retrieved by the group she was riding with. She was not injured.
Department of Natural Resources personnel say two more snowmobilers broke through the ice Sunday night and another incident occurred recently. No fatalities were reported.
Officials say always check the thickness of the ice with a spud or auger. Avoid cracks, heaves, or open water. If possible, ride with a group, carry a communication device, wear cold-weather gear, and carry safety equipment such as ice picks or claws.
Troopers say ice conditions can change, so stay alert and stay safe. The strongest ice is clear with a bluish tint, while weak ice is formed by melted and refrozen snow and appears milky.
