SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians says containment and cleanup efforts at the McKay Bay oil spill have been successfully completed.
The Tribe’s Natural Resources Division was notified about the spill the evening of April 16. Crews deployed oil-absorbent booms to contain the spill and protect nearby sensitive wetlands.
Following an on-site inspection, the U.S. Coast Guard determined the booms had absorbed the maximum amount of oil and recommended their removal. Mackinac Environmental removed the booms on Tuesday.
The tribe says a light sheen may remain visible on the water as residual oil naturally dissipates. Officials will continue to monitor the area, but significant harm to native species is not anticipated, and the boat launch has reopened to the public.
An investigation into the cause of the oil spill is ongoing.
