Isle Royale National Park gets Governor's Award for Historic Preservation

Isle Royale archeology crew

ISLE ROYALE NATIONAL PARK, MI— The collaborative stewardship of archaeological resources at Isle Royale National Park was recently honored with a 2026 Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation.

Since 2012, the cultural resource program has conducted archaeological survey work along the island’s Nipissing Beach. The Relict Shoreline Survey project has expanded scientists’ understanding of the island’s human past, identified new archaeological resources, and placed them into the wider context of archaeology in the Lake Superior Basin.

Among the successes of the project are the long-term connections forged between project research and the regional Ojibwe community.

Awardees include Isle Royale National Park, the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, and Grand Portage National Monument.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
