ST. IGNACE, MI (AP)--   From Detroit to the Upper Peninsula, many Michigan residents observed Labor Day by taking to the streets — or bridges.

Officials say about 40,000 people joined the annual walk across the Mackinac Bridge. Gov. Rick Snyder led the crowd over the 5-mile span Monday beginning at 7 a.m.

In a new twist, 84 athletes attempted to swim across the Straits of Mackinac to raise money for Habitat for Humanity.

Meanwhile, the Metro Detroit AFL-CIO hosted its annual Labor Day March. Several unions, including the United Auto Workers, hosted Labor Fest in Detroit.

Another union-organized parade was held in Muskegon.
In Grand Rapids, Mayor George Heartwell led the 5-mile Grand Crossings walk over six Grand River bridges. Shorter bridge walks were held in Frankenmuth and Midland.
