Driving on Mackinac Bridge won't be allowed during Labor Day Walk

ST. IGNACE, MI--   The Mackinac Bridge Authority is reminding drivers that they won’t be able to cross the span during the annual Labor Day Bridge Walk this year.

For safety reasons, the bridge will be closed to all traffic except for shuttle buses from 6 a.m. to noon Labor Day morning. The MBA says about 9,500 vehicles typically cross the bridge on the holiday, and they’re trying to reach as many motorists as possible to let them know they’ll need to modify their plans.

For those who get caught at the Mighty Mac, portable bathrooms will be placed along US-2 for several miles west of the bridge; water and snack stations will be located on US-2 and I-75 north and south of the bridge; and two MBA mechanics will patrol on both sides of the bridge to assist motorists with vehicle problems.

Michigan State Police will have additional troopers in the area during the bridge walk to regulate traffic, and the Michigan Department of Transportation is providing traffic control equipment.
