LSSU banishes winter by burning a snowman

Lake Superior State University

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— Lake Superior State University will hold its annual spring-launching event Friday—the burning of a snowman.

For the past 51 years, LSSU has fashioned a snowman out of a wooden frame covered in paper, straw, wire and paint and set it aflame to celebrate the end of winter.

A master of ceremonies will talk about the history of the event, poetry and prose will be read, and food and drink will be served. The snowman will be lit at 6 p.m. in Cisler Plaza on Lake State’s campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
