One dead, one missing in Portage Township fire

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP, MI— A house fire has killed one person and another is presumed dead in Houghton County.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Calumet Post were dispatched Friday around 9:15 p.m. to a residence in Portage Township on a report two people were trapped inside.

One person is confirmed deceased. Another is believed to have died, but has yet to be found.

Assisting at the scene were the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office, Otter Lake Fire Department, Mercy EMS, Stanton Township Fire Department, Hurontown Fire Department, Chassell Fire Department and Houghton County Medical Examiner.

An investigation to determine the cause of the fire is being handled by the MSP Eighth District Fire Investigator.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
