Firefighter injured battling blaze in Marinette

MARINETTE, WI— A fire in Marinette injured a firefighter and killed several pets Tuesday.

WLUK-TV reports crews were dispatched just after 7 a.m. to 1833 Wisconsin Street. The residents of the home were able to escape before firefighters arrived. Two dogs and one cat also escaped, but two other dogs and a cat died in the fire.

Steve Campbell is Assistant Chief of the Marinette Fire Department. He says one firefighter was burned on his hands, arms and back due to a flashover when he opened a door to get the other pets out of the house. The firefighter was taken to a burn center in Milwaukee and is expected to be released soon.

One resident was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

The home was a total loss.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
