Stephenson fire displaces seven residents, guts building

STEPHENSON, MI— A building was destroyed by fire in downtown Stephenson Wednesday.

It started around 12:30 p.m. in the Old Solander Building. WLUC-TV says the fire apparently began in an apartment on the upper floor of the residential and commercial building. An electrical issue is suspected to be the cause.

The Stephenson Fire Department used heavy equipment to pull the structure apart so firefighters could attack the flames.

Seven people from four apartments on the upper floor have been displaced, but no injuries were reported.

The apartments and two businesses on the ground floor are considered a total loss.

Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to nearby businesses.
