MADISON, WI (AP)-- A legislative committee is set to vote next week on a bill that would allow Wisconsin residents to purchase rifles and shotguns from dealers anywhere in the nation.
The U.S. Gun Control Act from 1968 banned interstate firearm sales but allowed dealers to sell long guns to buyers in contiguous states. A federal law enacted nearly two decades later granted states the ability to permit people to buy long guns from dealers in any state.
The Republican bill would lift the contiguous state ban on Wisconsin residents.
The Assembly's Natural Resources Committee is set to vote on the bill on Wednesday. Approval would clear the way for a vote in the full Assembly.
