UP lawmaker pens resolution blasting MDOT director

LANSING, MI--   Michigan Representative Scott Dianda says the director of the Michigan Department of Transportation is unfit to lead MDOT.

The Calumet Democrat introduced a resolution Wednesday outlining recent issues, an auditor general’s report, and other problems regarding Kirk Steudle’s performance.

The resolution mentions 23 railcars MDOT leased for future service between Ann Arbor and Howell.  The cars have been idle since 2010 at a cost of $1.1 million a year.

Dianda says the department also spent $9.5 million on landscaping along I-696 that has since eroded.

And a Michigan Auditor General’s report released this year cited MDOT for not following up on road warranties and holding road contractors responsible for their work.

Steudle has served as the director of MDOT since 2006.
