New Sault Ste. Marie lock to be funded

WASHINGTON, D.C.--   President Trump has signed into law a bill that funds construction of a new Soo lock.

America’s Water Infrastructure Act of 2018 includes nearly $1 billion to build a new Poe-sized lock. It’s the only one that can accommodate larger vessels on the Great Lakes.

Governor Rick Snyder has committed $50 million toward the project. Congress still needs to appropriate funds in separate legislation over numerous years to pay for the project.

The Act also advances research on eradicating invasive species such as Asian Carp and Zebra mussels; takes aim at resolving toxic algal blooms in the Great Lakes; and requires the EPA to help public water systems monitor for unregulated contaminates, such as PFAS.
