McBroom testifies in support of work-based learning

LANSING, MI— State Senator Ed McBroom has introduced a bill to allow more high school students to enter into apprenticeship programs while in school.

McBroom testified Wednesday before the Senate Appropriations Committee with Gogebic-Ontonagon Intermediate School District Superintendent Alan Tulppo and CTE director for the Delta Schoolcraft ISD, Trent Bellingar.

The bill would let school districts count students who are engaged in work-based learning in official pupil numbers for up to .75 of a full-time student—an increase from the .5 currently allowed.

McBroom says the legislation aims to help students jump-start rewarding and successful careers instead of starting their working life with significant college debt.
