Bohnak bill would better compensate schools for students involved in work-based CTE learning

LANSING, MI— State Representative Karl Bohnak has introduced a bill aimed at encouraging schools to offer more career and technical education through work-based learning.

Bohnak says labor shortages across Michigan make it critical for students to learn CTE skills. But schools only receive half the normal compensation for a student participating in CTE courses off-campus.

The bill would increase that rate to 75% of the normal funding for students taking those courses, giving schools more resources to invest in work-based learning. It also includes $2 million in grant funding for districts that incur extra costs related to students participating in work-based learning experiences.

The bill was referred to the House Appropriations Committee for further consideration.
