Marquette plan to construct more affordable housing moves forward

Fishbeck Engineering

MARQUETTE, MI— The Marquette City Commission has approved a Brownfield Plan to construct affordable housing at 401 West Washington Street.

Under the plan, engineers will construct a 16,150 square-foot mixed-use building with integrated parking, two commercial spaces, and 11 residential units. Nine of the units will be targeted to those who make at or below 120 percent of the Area Median Income.

A total reimbursement of $1,076,825 over 20 years is included under the plan.

Commissioner Sally Davis says she supports the project because it will be paid by the Downtown Development Authority through its new Tax Increment Financing plan.

“This does not affect the general budget of the city, but it is within the DDA boundaries and the TIF capture will affect the DDA and not the general budget of the city.”

Commissioners unanimously approved the project, which will next go through a site plan review by the City Planning Commission.
