MGH nurses ask administration to respond to security issue

MARQUETTE, MI--   Nurses at Marquette General Hospital are calling for stricter security after a man with a knife was arrested in the Emergency Department waiting room.

Registered Nurse Carolyn Hietamaki says MGH nurses are encountering more volatile situations.  She says that’s due to a rise in the number of substance abuse patients and recent policy changes made by the hospital.

Marquette General nurses, along with a representative from the Michigan Nurses Association, have asked to meet with hospital administration.  Officials have agreed.

Hietamaki says the incident and the circumstances that led to it need to be addressed in order to make the hospital safer for nurses, patients, and families.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
