UP COVID cases increase over the weekend

MARQUETTE, MI--   The coronavirus is now reported in Houghton and Delta counties. 

The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department learned Sunday of the first confirmed positive case in Houghton County. Officials are determining the exposure risk to recent contacts.

Public Health Delta & Menominee Counties says its case is an adult woman. No other information was released.

The Marquette County Health Department was notified Saturday of a second case of COVID-19 in the region, which was confirmed through commercial testing.  Officials are notifying people identified as close contacts.

Dickinson County Healthcare has collected 32 specimens. Eighteen were negative and 13 are pending. DCH collected a specimen at its alternate collection site from a resident of Marinette County, Wisconsin and that result was positive.

An employee of Mackinac Straits Health System in St. Ignace has tested positive for the coronavirus. That person is not a resident of Mackinac County.

As of Monday morning the state reported 5,486 confirmed positive cases in Michigan and 132 deaths.

WUPHD Health Officer Cathryn Beer is urging residents to get their information and updates from reputable sources like physicians and health departments.
