NMU to offer more plant-based entrees

MARQUETTE, MI— Northern Michigan University Dining is increasing its plant-based options.

In collaboration with Northern’s Animal Club and the Humane Society of the United States, Dining Services has signed the Forward Food Pledge. It’s a commitment to increase plant-based options each year through 2024.

The goal is to ensure that all students have access to healthy, sustainable and inclusive foods. By the end of 2024, NMU's plant-based menu entrées will represent 30 percent of the items offered to dining customers.

Officials say it will help prevent chronic diseases associated with poor diets.

As a result of signing the Forward Food Pledge, NMU now has access to the Humane Society’s ongoing consultation and support; menu evaluation; chef-led, customized in-person and virtual trainings; and assistance with environmental impact assessments.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
