UP women's shelters get grants

MARQUETTE, MI— Eight Upper Peninsula domestic violence shelters have received grants from the DTE Energy Foundation.

A total of $420,000 was given to 45 state-funded shelters around Michigan. The amount is based on bed count and will be used for critical expenses at each location.

Funding will also be used to offer holistic, survivor-centric services that include housing, transportation, employment, and support for survivors who need assistance with healthcare needs or are struggling to navigate the criminal justice system.

U.P. shelters to receive grants include the Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter in Calumet, the Alliance Against Violence and Abuse in Escanaba, Caring House, Inc. in Iron Mountain, DOVE in Ironwood, the Baraga County Shelter Home in L’Anse, Harbor House in Marquette, and Anishnaabek Community and Family Services and the Diane Peppler Resource Center—both in Sault Ste. Marie.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
