USDA provides grants, loans to help rural communities

MARQUETTE, MI— A portion of $1 billion in U.S. Department of Agriculture funding will benefit rural communities in the Upper Peninsula.

Among the awards, nearly $639,000 in Community Facilities Disaster Grants is going to Houghton and Gogebic counties. The money will be used to repair infrastructure damaged by the Father’s Day flooding of 2018. Munising Memorial Hospital will use a $63,000 Economic Impact Initiative Grant to purchase a mobile X-ray room. The equipment will benefit more than 9,600 people.

Officials say the money aims to increase access to health care, education, and public safety; spur community development; and build infrastructure for people living in rural communities.
