Soo Tribe gets grant to improve pedestrian safety, mobility

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians is getting a $19.8 million federal grant to improve the tribe’s infrastructure.

The Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity grant will be used to improve pedestrian safety on high-speed and high-traffic corridors, promote connectivity, and improve mobility for residents who depend on transit, walking, and bicycling.

Officials say multi-modal paths and bike lanes on Shunk Road, 3 Mile Road, and the Marquette Avenue corridors will encourage use of Sault Ste. Marie’s bike network. It will also improve safety by separating pedestrians from vehicle traffic.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
