Upgrades on the horizon for 2 Marquette County dams

Republic dam

MARQUETTE, MI— Two Marquette County dams are getting state funding for upgrades.

The Dam Risk Reduction Grant Program has slated $473,724 for partial removal of the Carp River Intake Dam. The upper portion of the spillway will be removed, lowering the reservoir an additional 10 feet.

Officials say that will greatly reduce the risk to health and habitat and potentially lower the overall hazard classification of the dam.

And $750,000 will fund the removal and subsequent construction of a rock arch rapids at the Republic Dam. The new structure is designed to handle flooding events. It will also allow for river connectivity with a series of step pools in the rapids.
