MARQUETTE, MI— The Marquette City Commission took some time at its meeting Monday night to praise the actions of city employees during a high-stress and dangerous situation last week.

On Monday, January 22nd, a man armed with a handgun walked into the lower level of City Hall, pointed it at people, and demanded to speak with police. He was eventually subdued.

City Manager Karen Kovacs lauded the calm professionalism of several employees as they informed others of the circumstances.

“While we can train all day long for a situation like that, nothing really ever comes to actual action until you’re right in the middle of it.”

Marquette Police Chief Ryan Grim recognized three officers responsible for restraining the suspect and disarming him. Officer Jeff Czarney was given the Meritorious Service Award for tackling and disarming the suspect and Officers Jon Braun and Ben Takala were given the Commendation Award for helping to secure the man after he was brought under control.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
