Coast Guard suspends its search for ice climber missing in Alger County

MUNISING, MI— An ice climber remains missing, after he fell into Lake Superior from Miner’s Castle Tuesday evening.

The National Park Service says James Bake, 32, of Gaylord was climbing just after 5 p.m. when waves resulted in his fall from an icy rock ledge.

An ice rescue team from the Marquette Coast Guard station, a helicopter from Air Station Traverse City, the Superior High Angle Rescue Professionals team, Alger County Rescue 21, and the National Park Service responded to the scene.

Bake has not yet been found.

Officials say search efforts will continue by land, but the Coast Guard has suspended searches by water and air.
