Drones used to find lost tubers in Marinette County

STEPHENSON, WI— The Marinette County Sheriff’s Office used drones to find some missing river tubers over the weekend.

Sunday around 7:37 p.m., dispatchers received a call that three tubers had overturned and become lost on the Peshtigo River in Stephenson. One of the tubers tried to find their way out and became lost in a wooded area. They were found by the first deputies to arrive at the scene.

The Sheriff’s Office activated the drone team and requested help from the City of Marinette drone operator. It took only six minutes after the drone’s deployment to find the other two tubers.

Using the spotlight feature, the operators were able to use the drone to direct firefighters to the tubers’ location. All were brought back safely.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Village of Crivitz Fire Department, Stephenson Fire Department, Crivitz Rescue, and the Marinette Police Department.

The drone was purchased through donations from Faith Lutheran Church in Marinette.
