Elderly Marinette County man who walked away from his home last week found alive

LAKE, WI— A missing man with memory loss has been found alive in Marinette County.

Norman Hoefert, 76, left his home in the town of Lake Tuesday. Multiple aerial and drone units, K9 and mounted horse teams, officers, firefighters, and motorized search teams were deployed in a large-scale search effort.

Friday around 1:25 p.m., an item of interest was found in a heavily wooded area about a mile from where Hoefert was last seen. Officers determined it was an article of his clothing. Police found several other items in the area and eventually came across Hoefert, who was lying on the ground, alive and able to speak.

Hoefert was taken to a waiting rescue squad to receive medical treatment.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
