UPDATE: Search continues in Copper Harbor for missing canoeist

UPDATE, 7:57 6/29/25— The Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office says the body of the second missing canoeist was recovered Sunday evening.

"Our deepest condolences go out to the families, friends, and loved ones affected by this tragic event. We ask that their privacy be respected during this incredibly difficult time.

"We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all of the agencies and personnel who assisted in this operation, including Keweenaw Search and Rescue, Copper Harbor FD, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Michigan State Police dive team, Michigan DNR, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, local area restaurants and businesses who donated food and supplies.

"The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office would also like to thank the community for their continued support and cooperation throughout this challenging recovery effort."

COPPER HARBOR, MI— Law enforcement and emergency personnel are searching for a person who fell into Lake Superior in Copper Harbor Saturday.

The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office reports three individuals were canoeing when their vessel capsized. One person made it to shore and contacted 911 around 3:50 a.m.

Multiple agencies responded. They were able to recover the body of one of the two missing canoers as of Saturday evening.

The search resumed Sunday. No additional information has been provided at this time.

Assisting deputies in the search are Keweenaw Search and Rescue, Copper Harbor Fire, the U.S. Coast Guard (with helicopter support), Michigan DNR, and the Michigan State Police dive team.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
