UP lawmakers give thumbs-up to new MI budget

LANSING, MI— Michigan Senator Ed McBroom and Representative Jenn Hill are applauding passage of the Fiscal Year 2024 state budget.

McBroom says it’s far from perfect, but it includes a $200 million debt payment to the higher education MPSERS retirement plan, $7.3 million for Helen Newberry Joy Hospital, $3 million for the Net River Dam in Covington and the Republic Dam, and funding for modernization of the Escanaba paper mill, among a number of other investments.

Hill notes the new budget includes the largest investment in education in Michigan’s history, including free lunch and breakfast for every public school student, affordable pre-K, and a substantial increase in funding for student transportation in rural school districts.
