A chat with the artistic director Karen Beacom about the ambitious and grand production

The Soo Opera will present Giacomo Puccini's Toscaon August 9th and 11th at the Soo Theatre, and on August 13th on Mackinac Island.

Tosca is a story of passion, political intrigue, and sacrifice, with a libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. The opera is based on a French play by Victorien Sardou and takes place in Rome in June of 1800. Historically, it takes place during the Napoleonic wars, but the three main characters' actions all happen within a day's time.

Opera buffs will recognize Puccini's score, and famously, the arias Vissi d'arte, E lucevan le stelle, and the chorus Te Deum.

The Soo Opera company will present Tosca on two occasions, fully staged in the Soo Theatre in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and in a slightly reduced arrangement as a touring production at Mission Point Theater on Mackinac Island.

Kurt talked with artistic director Karen Beacom about staging Puccini's ambitious opera in two locations:
