The Local Spin with Lena Maude

Lena Maude, a singer-songwriter from Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, is set to release her latest collection of songs, Mirrors & Anomalies, on cassette. Lena shared insights into her DIY approach, her connection with the local music scene, and the importance of collaboration with her sister, Sarah, a.k.a. Lady Hunter, who drummed and collaborated on the tape. The project, spanning songs written between 2009 and 2024, blends her signature fingerstyle guitar work, indie rock, and experimental folk-pop.

The release show will be on September 13th at The Orpheum Theater in Hancock, MI, followed by an appearance at YOOP! Fest in Calumet the following weekend. Reflecting on why she chose to release her music on tape, Lena credits the inspiration to Kitschy Spirit Records, a local label with a nostalgic ethos. She recalls how tapes played a big part in her childhood, making the medium feel personal and fitting for this project. The DIY nature of the album extends to its production—mixed by a friend and featuring contributions from those close to her, including her sister.

When asked about her live performances, Lena explained how her sound evolved through experimenting with different instruments. Using a looping pedal, ukulele, small synths, and shakers, her shows often combine intricate fingerstyle guitar with layered loops and spontaneous sounds, creating an intimate and experimental atmosphere.

In addition to the music, attendees of her release show can also look forward to a "Colorful Pop-Up Shop" featuring her whimsical watercolors and other artwork.
