Noah Bauer, a musician originally from Manistique in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, has released his latest album, “Lunitidal Interval.” This collection of songs, rich with thematic depth and musical intricacy, reflects Bauer's evolution as an artist and his connection to both the natural world and the human condition.
Bauer began learning to play music in childhood, inspired by his older brother’s piano playing. This early exposure to classical pieces like Beethoven’s "Moonlight Sonata" and the beloved "Linus and Lucy" from Peanuts ignited Bauer’s passion for music. He began piano lessons in third grade, transitioned to percussion in middle school, and eventually found his way to the guitar during his college years at Northern Michigan University.
"I started guitar and songwriting at the same time," Bauer recalls. "It took about five years until I felt like I cracked the code as a guitarist and songwriter." This period of growth and exploration laid the foundation for the songs featured on “Lunitidal Interval,” some of which have been in the making for nearly a decade.
The album's title, “Lunitidal Interval,” refers to the time lag between lunar culmination and the next high tide. This concept aligns with the album’s exploration of cycles and rhythms in nature and life. Bauer describes the creative process behind the album as a journey toward minimalism, focusing on guitar, vocals, and occasional whistling, allowing a raw display of musicianship and emotion.
Bauer's songwriting process is intuitive and organic, often starting with lyrics and letting the music follow. “I don’t pay attention to the length of the song during the writing process,” he says. “I just start writing lyrics and continue until I feel I’ve said what needs to be said.” This approach results in songs that vary widely in length and structure, offering listeners a diverse and immersive experience.
Kurt Hauswirth spoke with Noah in our main studio about his music:
The recording process for “Lunitidal Interval” took place at Dead River Sound in Forestville with audio engineer Ryan Staples. Bauer enjoyed capturing his creative vision with the help of Staples, trying multiple takes of each song until he got it right.
To celebrate the release of “Lunitidal Interval,” Bauer will perform an album release show on Thursday, August 8th, at the Ore Dock Brewing Company in Marquette. The audience can expect a full performance of the album, additional original songs, and a selection of covers that resonate with Bauer.
