Bob Howe, Director of the ReStore for Marquette County Habitat for Humanity, joined us to discuss an urgent initiative—the upcoming "Raise the Roof" Build Blitz, happening on Friday, November 22nd, and Saturday, November 23rd. This project aims to install a roof on a home in Ely Township before winter weather makes further progress challenging.
Bob emphasized that completing the roof is critical, as it allows construction work to continue through the harsh winter months. "If we don’t get the roof on, there could be three feet of snow inside the house, and no one wants to shovel that out," Bob explained. Ensuring the house is "dried in" with a roof, shingles, and windows means the team can move forward with interior work like heating, plumbing, and other finishes regardless of the season.
Habitat for Humanity is seeking volunteers to make this project a success—specifically those with some roofing experience and a willingness to work at heights. However, Bob stressed that safety is a top priority, with scaffolding, railings, and other protective measures in place. "It's not like the 70s where you're walking on a three-and-a-half-inch stud wall two stories up," he joked, reflecting on how safety standards have improved.
As ReStore Director, Bob highlighted the critical role of donations and sales at the ReStore in supporting Habitat’s mission. "The funds from all the donated items go back into the affiliate, helping us buy materials and keep operations running," he shared. "We have a very generous community, and it makes a big difference."
Kurt Hauswirth spoke with Bob about the Build Blitz:
For those interested in joining the Build Blitz, volunteers are encouraged to call Joan at 906-228-3578 to sign up or learn more. As Bob reminded listeners, "This is a great opportunity to make a tangible impact, help a family in need, and contribute to the community."
