A chat with vocalist, keyboard player, and songwriter Audree Stephens

Michigan-based alternative rock band Iridescence recently released their full-length album, "Welcome to the Cinema." Described as a two-year labor of love, the project channels the spirit of film and theater, traversing multiple genres with a unique blend of alt-rock energy and pop flair. Vocalist and keyboardist Audree Stephens shared insights into the creative process, challenges, and triumphs that shaped the album.

From horror to Westerns, the cinematic themes of Welcome to the Cinema have deep roots. “Gracie, Kent, and I have a tradition of watching horror films together,” Stephens shared. The drummer’s fascination with the Halloween franchise influenced some of their darker, indie horror-inspired tracks. Stephens, who is also a screenwriter, contributed a range of filmic inspirations, from Westerns to dramas, shaping the genre-spanning album. “We wanted to explore these different sounds but also ensure they didn’t come across as cliché.”

The album marked a significant step forward from Iridescence’s self-titled EP, bringing both challenges and growth. “It’s been a long journey,” Stephens reflected. Producer Dan Zini offered his expertise and studio access at Northern Michigan University, providing invaluable support. “We felt really lucky to have that space for a few weeks of recording,” she said. Yet, as with many creative endeavors, pressures emerged. “By the end, there were moments where we felt rushed, as most artists do,” Stephens admitted.

While Iridescence’s songwriting is a collaborative effort, Stephens often starts the process using GarageBand, crafting the initial structure before sharing it with the band. One memorable track, “A Reason,” surprised her with its immediate reception. “I didn’t expect such a positive reaction,” she said. The band clicked instantly, with little need for revision. Another standout moment came during the creation of “Clean,” where a choir arranged by NMU Arts Chorale’s Dr. Erin Colwitz transformed the track. “Hearing the choir for the first time was magical,” Stephens recounted.

Bringing "Welcome to the Cinema" to the stage has been both rewarding and nerve-wracking. The band’s recent shows, including performances at Black Rocks and Grand Rapids’ Pyramid Scheme, marked their first live renditions of the album’s tracks. “Playing with in-ear monitors and tracks was a learning curve, but the audience’s positive response gave us confidence,” Stephens said.

Looking back, Stephens and the band acknowledge key lessons from the album’s creation, including the need for better organization and time management. “We all juggle full-time jobs, but prioritizing our creative process is essential,” she said.

With "Welcome to the Cinema," Iridescence invites listeners to experience a musical journey that blends cinematic storytelling with alt-rock and pop sensibilities. It’s a testament to their passion, creativity, and the resilience required to bring such an ambitious project to life.
