Local composer Brandon Nelson has dedicated his life to music, and despite facing immense personal challenges, his passion for composing remains unwavering. Brandon was recently diagnosed with metastatic end-stage cancer. He plans to continue uploading his works online to YouTube to help provide additional funding for his family after his death. He also hopes to compose a few new works. In a recent conversation with Kurt Hauswirth, Nelson reflected on his journey as a musician, a composer, the impact of his work, and the legacy he hopes to leave behind.

Nelson's love for composition began at an early age. He was drawn to sheet music even in elementary school. His journey as a musician formally took off when he joined the school band, choosing the French horn as his primary instrument—a choice he now humorously refers to as a "love-hate relationship."

His passion for composing flourished under the mentorship of his band director, Dave Dagenais. "I would get my hands on manuscript paper and just start writing," Nelson said. His career has since spanned collaborations with local school music programs, including recent work with the Kingsford High School band. "Working with students is one of the most rewarding parts of being a composer," he said.

Nelson's compositions have reached far beyond the local music scene, but his recent induction into the Marquette Music Hall of Fame is a testament to his influence. "I'm still in shock that they picked me," he admitted. "I look at the other names on that list and feel incredibly honored."

Looking ahead, Nelson is focused on two key projects: uploading his complete catalog online and composing new works. One of his goals is to write music for younger bands. "Concert band is my world—it's where I started," he said. "I’d love to contribute to the repertoire for middle school musicians and prove that music doesn’t have to be technically complex to be meaningful."

Beyond music, Nelson is driven by a deeply personal motivation: securing a legacy for his family. "I'm not doing this for myself anymore," he said. "I want my wife and children to have something that will outlive me." By making his work widely available, he hopes to create a lasting source of support for them.

In the face of adversity, Brandon Nelson continues to compose, teach, and inspire. His music, like his spirit, is built to endure.
