The December edition of North Words and Music will bring a holiday focus to Peter White Public Library on Wednesday, December 10, at 6:30 p.m. The Community Room will host an evening of seasonal storytelling, poetry, skits, and music built around the theme “Christmas Sounds.” The program will feature regular contributors Marty Achatz, B.G. Bradley, Seamus Collins, and Linda Smith, with special appearances from Jim Edwards, Jacque Love, Public Radio 90’s Nicole Walton, and guest performer Whiskey Ryan.
During a recent studio visit, Achatz and Bradley shared a preview of the upcoming program. Achatz, a two-time U.P. Poet Laureate, discussed his selection of poems for the evening, noting that he aims to match the tone of the show’s holiday theme. Bradley reflected on the winter atmosphere and Upper Peninsula character that shaped the new material he created for the performance.
This edition will also include a new element for the series: a short story presented in the style of a radio play. Written by Bradley and shaped collaboratively by the cast, the story is set in the late 1960s and incorporates a mix of humor, nostalgia, and ensemble performance. The full cast will bring multiple voices to the script, creating a continuous narrative that weaves together poetry, music, and dramatic scenes.
Kurt Hauswirth had Bradley and Achatz in our studio to record a preview show and interview:
Audience participation will be encouraged during familiar seasonal carols performed by Big Lake Acoustic. Achatz and Bradley noted that the group’s long-standing collaboration (along with the contributions of Edwards, Love, Collins, Smith, and Walton) helps bring the varied pieces of the program together each month.
“Christmas Sounds” promises an evening that highlights local talent, embraces the spirit of the season, and captures the unique character of winter in the Upper Peninsula. The event is free and open to the public at Peter White Public Library.
