This Sunday, March 15, downtown Negaunee becomes the stage for a unique collaboration between the culinary and performing arts. While the historic Vista Theater prepares for a major restoration this fall, the Iron Arts Theatre group is keeping its creative momentum alive through a special fundraiser at Strega Nonna.
The evening features the debut of Leslie Parkkonen’s original show, "Leading Lady: Stories from the Stage...and Life." The performance promises a blend of Broadway classics and sharp-witted storytelling, tracing Parkkonen’s personal journey through motherhood, reinvention, and living with Tourette’s. It is a raw exploration of finding one’s identity after the roles we play (both on and off stage) begin to shift.
The event serves a dual purpose: celebrating local talent and raising essential funds for the Vista Theater’s future. Following the building’s transition to city ownership to secure restoration grants, Iron Arts Theatre is now focused on raising capital for the modern lighting and sound systems the venue will need once it reopens. With the Vista's 100th anniversary approaching this September, the community is rallying to ensure the landmark remains a cornerstone of the downtown economy.
Kurt Hauswirth spoke with Iron Arts Theatre/PAAC Board President Rusty Bowers and Strega Nonna Head Chef Rachael Grossman about the event:
Attendees can expect a full sensory experience. Grossman of Strega Nonna is preparing an abundant Italian-inspired buffet, featuring an array of pastas, meats, and seasonal vegetables. The evening begins at 5:00 PM with live dinner music by John Mallo, followed by the performance at 6:00 PM. Nate Heffron, Negaunee’s City Manager, will also be on hand to provide updates on the theater’s restoration timeline.
