Marquette musician and poet Troy Graham recently sat down in our studios to discuss the motivations behind his new 10-track album, “Hope and Unity Forever.” Sparked by the isolation of the pandemic and a growing weariness toward modern societal division, the record serves as a musical antidote to cultural anxiety. Graham intentionally channels heavy global concerns into stories of common humanity and resilience, drawing on his extensive background leading youth writing workshops to create a therapeutic space where listeners can feel less alone.
This project also marks a turning point in Graham’s two-decade career following the heartbreaking breakup of his former touring bluegrass band, Sparrow Tree. Forced onto a solo path to ensure self-reliance, Graham grappled with perfectionism during production, re-recording the tracks multiple times with Joel, his studio engineer of twenty years. The final project successfully balances raw, foot-stomping folk energy with intimate, message-driven songwriting. It features blunt social commentary on "The Norm," a profound message of gratitude on "Woke Up Today," and a pure love ballad titled "My Last Name," dedicated to his wife, who is his partner in many ways, including running his live sound on the road.
Public Radio 90's Kurt Hauswirth spoke with Graham about his latest album:
Deeply grounded in the Upper Peninsula arts scene, Graham chose Marquette’s Superior Culture for his launch because the venue's inclusive, multi-generational atmosphere perfectly mirrors the organic, unifying message of his music. The momentum carries forward into the heart of summer as he prepares to take the main stage at the Hiawatha Traditional Music Festival. Tasked with delivering the festival's very first opening performance, Graham views the slot as both an immense honor and the ideal local sanctuary to finally bring like-minded people together through his new songs.
