The Marquette Symphony Orchestra is launching its milestone thirtieth season with a free outdoor community concert on July 9 at the new Peg Hirvonen Bandshell in Presque Isle. Music Director and Conductor Octavio Más-Arocas shared his excitement about kicking off the year with a program honoring America’s 250th birthday, featuring a mix of patriotic, jazz, big band, and Latin American styles to celebrate the human spirit. Business Manager Greta Young highlighted that support from Eagle Mine and local donors keeps this neighborhood event accessible for attendees, who are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and set up a picnic. Más-Arocas noted that while performing outdoors requires amplification and presents natural acoustic challenges, the shared energy between the orchestra and the audience creates a unique, collective bond.
To ensure patrons secure their favorite seats at Kaufman Auditorium, the orchestra is detailing season ticket subscriptions for both new and renewing members. Young explained an important logistical detail for patrons, noting that university ticket operations have temporarily relocated to the Berry Events Center due to construction at the Superior Dome. This arrangement runs through July 19, after which single-concert ticket sales will officially open. Young also reminded listeners that the annual holiday performances are excluded from the standard season package and will go on sale individually starting July 22.
Kurt Hauswirth spoke with Más-Arocas and Young about the 2026-27 season:
Another highlight of the upcoming season is the return of the vocal competition, "Sing with the Symphony," in which the organization is recruiting local talent. The competition invites any Marquette County resident to submit a short video audition showcasing their abilities in any genre, ranging from classical to rock and pop. Up to five finalists will be chosen to perform live with the orchestra in January, with the grand prize winner decided by audience vote. Más-Arocas and Young emphasized that this initiative, alongside high school side-by-side collaborations and a diverse musical repertoire, aims to dismantle traditional barriers and welcome the entire community into the symphonic experience.
