After releasing her retrospective tape “Mirrors & Anomalies,” DIY singer-songwriter Lena Maude steps into a focused new artistic era with her album, “Just in Case Love.” Written largely while traveling out west after leaving Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, the eight-track record represents a distinct shift from clearing out past song archives toward building a fresh, intentional narrative journey. Seeking a space that balanced professional polish with a grounded, relaxed atmosphere, Maude bypassed glossy western studios for Dirt Floor Recording Studio in Connecticut. There, organic synchronicities and collaborative ease allowed her to marry her experimental folk roots with a touch of early-country storytelling inspired by pre-electric Bob Dylan and childhood musical memories.
At the heart of the project is a subtle yet resolute optimism—an intentional choice to view life’s heavy moments through a lens of hope rather than cynicism. The title track anchors the album with the philosophical premise that despite life’s inevitable griefs and trials, love remains the fundamental framework worth betting on. Maude weaves a delicate balance of light and shadow throughout the songwriting, accompanied by her own collage-style illustrations in a companion lyric poetry booklet. From dark undertones hidden beneath bright arrangements to the album’s parting invitation to adorn oneself with whatever pleases the inner child, the songs repeatedly return to themes of self-acceptance, emotional authenticity, and recognizing when one already has enough.
