Gerald Corkin passes away

MARQUETTE, MI— Longtime Marquette County civil servant Gerald Corkin has died.

The 82-year-old passed at UPHS-Marquette on Thursday.

A Negaunee native, Corkin served on the Marquette County Board of Commissioners since 1985, serving as chair for more than 30 years. He was known for supporting plans for the redevelopment of Sawyer and relocating the county airport to the former Air Force Base. A street there is named for him.

Among several other community positions, Corkin served as chair of the Central Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Regional Commission, chair of the Upper Peninsula 911 Authority, and on the Negaunee City Council.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
