Land to run for Levin's seat

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Former Republican Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land says she soon will file to run for the U.S. Senate seat opening up with the retirement of Democrat Carl Levin.

Land is the first Republican to move toward becoming a candidate. She announced on Facebook and Twitter on Monday morning that she is starting to put together a campaign strategy and policy team.

Land, of Byron Center, intends to file papers to run by July 1. She says "now is our chance to win."

The 54-year-old served two four-year terms as Secretary of State from 2003 through 2010.

She has been waiting for Republican Representative Mike Rogers to decide whether to run. He has made no announcement yet.

Democrats have coalesced behind Representative Gary Peters as their candidate to succeed Levin.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
