Group promotes redistricting initiative on November ballot

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   The group behind a ballot proposal to change how the state draws its political lines is ready to rally people to vote in November.

The Michigan Supreme Court officially sent the measure to the ballot Tuesday night. It would create an independent redistricting commission made up of Republicans, Democrats and Independents.

Lately the group has had to split its time between fighting off legal challenges and getting the word out.

Katie Fahey is the executive director of Voters Not Politicians. She says they’re excited for the next step.

“We’re planning to staff up, get our ‘Vote Yes on 2’ everywhere that we can and really be going toe-to-toe with those who we know will have millions poured into this election – or most likely will – who want to maintain that status quo,” she says.

Opponents of the proposal said it would change too much of the state’s governing structure and shift the powers of the different branches. They say they’re disappointed with the court’s decision, but will respect it.
