Gubernatorial candidates spar over handling of Larry Nassar case

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   Two candidates for governor are fighting over how Larry Nassar came to be charged.

Nassar is the former Michigan State University sports doctor who sexually assaulted his patients.

Attorney General Bill Schuette is the Republican candidate for governor. His office handled the case.

“My team at the Department of Attorney General had the capacity, had the ability, and we had the will to do this case.”

Schuette says then-interim Ingham County Prosecutor Gretchen Whitmer refused to prosecute Nassar. She’s now the Democratic candidate for governor.

But Whitmer says she didn’t refuse to prosecute Nassar. At the time, Schuette said his office was in the best position to prosecute the case because it involved multiple counties.
