25 Finlandia students to benefit from Giving Day

HANCOCK, MI--   Finlandia University’s first-ever Giving Day resulted in nearly $9,000 in donations for student textbooks.

The Finlandia Alumni Board established the event as a way to give back to current students. It kicked off Friday, sending out social media posts every 90 minutes. After waiting a brief amount of time for any donations in the mail, officials said $8,945 was raised by 67 gifts in 28 hours. Almost half the gifts came through Facebook and the other half predominantly through the university website.

That means 35 current Finlandia students will receive a $250 textbook award for use at North Wind Books. All full-time degree-seeking students in good academic standing are eligible to apply until August 9.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
