Burn barrel to blame for Portage Township structure fire

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP, MI--   Houghton County Sheriff’s deputies say fire in a burn barrel led to a structure fire in Portage Township Tuesday.

Around 4:10 p.m. officials responded to the Sheridan Place on US-41. They say fire in a barrel ignited a nearby wooden fence, which ignited a storage shed, which then ignited a neighboring log home.

Deputies say the home was unoccupied at the time and no injuries are reported.

Officials are reminding residents to check the Michigan DNR’s Burn Permits Management System website before burning any debris.

MTU Public Safety, Houghton City Police and the MSP Calumet Post assisted at the scene.
