Driver ticketed for causing Shiras Hills crash

MARQUETTE, MI--   A Deerton woman was found to be at fault for a head-on crash in Marquette Sunday.

City police say it happened around 3:25 p.m. on Shiras Hill. Investigation revealed a Ford pickup truck driven by Elizabeth Schut, 56, of Deerton was southbound on US-41 when she lost control of the vehicle. It slid into the northbound lanes and hit a Chevy SUV driven by Lance Beckman, 23, of Gwinn.

The Jaws of Life were used to extricate Beckman from his vehicle.

All the occupants from both vehicles were taken to UPHS-Marquette for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Schut was cited for driving too fast for conditions.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
