El Fechtali set free in Munising

MUNISING, MI--   A Canadian man found guilty of attempting to kidnap a Munising girl is now a free man.

Mohammed el Fechtali, 42, was convicted by a jury earlier this month on the charge, as well as accosting a child for immoral purposes.

Thursday, Alger County judge William Carmody granted a motion to dismiss the case against el Fechtali.  He set aside the verdict for attempted kidnapping and sentenced him to time served on the second charge.

El fechtali says he only asked the girl for directions and a confession he made was coerced by police.

Prosecutor Karen Bahrman says she will appeal the judge’s decision.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
