Escanaba OKs municiple coal-fired power plant sale

(ESCANABA)- The Escanaba City Council has approved the sale of the municipal coal-fired power plant for $1.5 million to a private local company.

The ‘Daily Press’ reports officials expected to sign a sales contract today with Escanaba Green Energy.

The company plans to convert the power plant to burn biomass.

Escanaba has been working for five years to find a use for the aging and inefficient plant.

Besides buying the plant, the company also is buying 17,000 tons of coal that remain on the property.

The council approved the sale Wednesday on a 4-1 vote.
