Fallen officer memorial service set for next week in Marquette

MARQUETTE, MI--   Officers from various law enforcement agencies are gathering in Marquette next week for an Upper Peninsula Peace Officers Memorial Service.

Part of National Police week, the annual service is open to the public and honors officers who were killed in the line of duty from the U.P. and bordering Wisconsin and Ontario police and corrections departments.  This year’s service will be held Friday, May 20 at the Superior Dome.

At 9 a.m. a motorcade will travel from the Negaunee State Police Post to the Dome.  A bagpiper will begin the service with a processional at 10 a.m. and NMU President Fritz Erickson will welcome attendees.

Since 1885, 27 officers working in the U.P. for various police or corrections departments have died while on the job.  Five of the officers were with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
